Jennie was born in Transylvania county NC. She grew up in the mountains of North Carolina. She married Harrison T. Cowan, who also grew up in the mountains. In about 1952 they moved to Winston-Salem so HT could drive for McClean Trucking company. Later in life she became a nurse. She raised four children. The young ladies became nurses and the young men became engineers.

She was widowed early in life. For many years she moved back to Waynesville, NC. Later, she moved to Kernersville to be closer to her children.

Jennie was opinionated on many topics and had no issue with sharing her thoughts whether you liked them or not.
