Son of Simon and Ellen Gardner(Cowles)Ostrander

Russell was married Zay Dora Portor in 1878 she died in 1888. In 1892 Russell married Lou S. Davis.

Russell served as Ingham County Circuit Court Commissioner 1877-1880. He then served as Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney 1881-1882. Russell was Mayor of Lansing, Michigan 1896-1897. Russell serve as a Justice of Michigan State Supreme Court 1905-1919. He was Chief Justice in 1911 and 1918 for the Michigan State Supreme Court.
