Retired Air Force Col. John Richard Knight V. 99, Hopkinsville and New Castle, N.H., died Thursday, June 11, 2015, following a period of declining health.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. June 27 at Hebron United Methodist Church, Cox Mill Road.

Masonic rites will be later at the Masonic Temple, Portsmouth, N.H.

Burial will be private at West Point Cemetery, United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

William F. Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls, N.Y., is in charge of arrangements.

A native of the Newstead community, he was born May 21, 1916, the son of the late John Richard Knight IV and Elizabeth Adams Foard, Hopkinsville, and was reared on War Path Farm.

After graduation from high school, he did post-graduate work at Kavanaugh School, Lawrenceburg, before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point, where graduated in the 1940 class.

In the Army, he was a pilot and trained with pilots who went on to fight the Battle of Britain. During World War II, he served as a bomber pilot prior to joining the Pacific Campaign with the Fifth Army.

He late lead a wing bombers during the Korean War. His Air force career continued at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in research and development and he rejoined the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War.

He retired from the Air force in 1966 and the family setted in New Castle, H.H., and purchased his family farm in Christian County. His second career included earning his doctorate from City University of New York and teaching at Austin Peay State University and Murray State University. In retirement, he managed the family farms.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and Hebron Methodist Church at Church Hill.

His wife, Barbara Bradford Wrensch, preceded him in death. A son, John, and his sister, Mrs. Terry (Margaret Rose) Sanford, also preceded his in death.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Charles (Dustan) Tarbell, New Castle, Frances of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; a grandson, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in JR Knight's name to Christian county Humane Society, 1229 Skyline Drive, Hopkinsville, KY 42240.
