William David Curnow, formerly of Hazleton, died Wednesday afternoon at 3:05 at his home, 397 South river street, Wilkes-Barre, following a short illness. He was 81. Mr. Curnow was a member of the former firm of Curnow and Murray, which held the street cleaning contract in Wilkes-Barre for about 14 years, after which the work was done by city employes. He was also a member of the State Paving Company.

Born in Stockton in 1868, Mr. Curnow went to Wilkes-Barre 52 years ago and had resided there since. He was active for years in Republican affairs, both in the city and county. He served as deputy sheriff during the term of Sheriff James Harvey from 1899 to 1901. In recent years, Mr. Curnow had been employed by Wilkes-Barre city. He was a foreman in the Park Department for about four years and then retired for a year. He afterward became an assistant foreman in the Street Department, holding that post until he became a watchman at the city incinerator. He retired in October due to ill health. Mr. Curnow as a member of Central Methodist church, Wilkes-Barre.

He leaves two children, Mrs. R. C. Swank, at home, and William H. Curnow, Wilkes-Barre; also three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 1:30 at the Kniffen Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre, with Rev. Dr. Howard E. Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn cemetery. Friends may call today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.
