Virginia Ruth Moody Messer-Smith

Virginia Ruth Moody Messer-Smith, 93, of White Pine, born January 28, 1918, in Morristown, died March 26, 2011, in Alabama. She was the only child of Alma Amanda Smithson Moody and Thomas Benton Moody. She was preceded in death by her three husbands, A. Ralph Stapleton (15 years), Roy J. Messer (35 years) and W. Dillard Smith (3 years). She was lovingly cared for in the home of her granddaughter in Alabama for the three years preceding her death. She was retired after working for 25 years as a receptionist and administrative assistant for the Universal Furniture Company in Morristown. She served as president of the Hamblen County Democratic Women's Club and the Jefferson County Democratic Women's Club, and was a member of Jefferson County's Democratic Executive Committee. She was a long time member of Morristown's Pilot Club, and served as its president. She served on the Morristown-Hamblen Adult Center board of directors, an organization established by her Pilot Club. She served as president of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Women's Association and represented Tennessee on the National Rural Electric Women's Association as a director. She served as president of the Jefferson County Federation of Women. She was a member of the White Pine Lion's Club, the Tennessee Commission on Aging, the White Pine Industrial Board, the Douglas Cherokee Board, the Alps Advisory Board, and served on the board of directors of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. She served for 12 years as a director of the Appalachian Electric Cooperative. Always active in her church, the First United Methodist Church of White Pine, she served on several committees and the Administrative Board. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 7, 2011, at 1:00 p.m., in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of White Pine. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be made to the First United Methodist Church of White Pine, P.O. Box 146, White Pine, Tennessee 37890. Arrangements by Hughes Cremation & Funeral Service, Daphne, Alabama.
