Father of 13 children.
Husband of 4 wives (1825 wed-Lucinda A Greene, 1828 wed-Mary Ann Peed, 1830 wed-Mary Posey and 1853 wed-Mary Jane Holmes).
1st wife and child died at birthing.
2nd wife died after child died at birthing.
3rd wife cared for daughter Virginia Ann Arnold Jones 1831-1894 and birthed six more children, then passed.
4th wife cared for youngest children and birthed six children to live on past the Civil War.
Battle of Fredericksburg, VA. - Gen. Doubleday took over the Falmouth house as headquarters. Peach orchards ready to bear first time were mowed down by swords of Union forces.
John was put in jail for a time because he refused to sign the pledge. He was released, at the close of the war.
John passed due to bad health, at the last. He never lived to see his last son born.

Ground stone is a second one to replace the aged original weather damaged (mica and iron field stone). This is showing the error for the actual birth and death records, in family bibles. Granddaughter, Helen (Arnold) Dodd had the headstone installed.
