"Greenfield", one of the estates of Colonel William Preston, lay originally within the boundaries of Augusta County, but since 1770 in Botetourt County, the latter county having been set off from Augusta County in that year. At the time of Colonel William Preston's death this estate comprised two thousand one hundred and seventy-five acres of land. A grant was given to him as early as 1761 by Governor Francis Fauquier. The estate was added to by subsequent purchases and grants to him by Lord Botetourt and the Earl of Dunmore during their respective Governorships. The residence on the "Greenfield" estate was constructed under Colonel William Preston's directions in 1762, and was occupied by him as early as 1763. When William Preston's Will was probated the "Greenfield" estate was devised to John Preston. After the death of his first wife, Mary (Radford) Preston, he conveyed the property on March 29, 1811 to Francis Preston and Thomas L. Preston in trust for the benefit of his children.* John's daughter, Susanna Smith Preston who married William Moseley Radford, inherited the estate and after William's death in 1876, the estate passed to his grandson, Alfred Garnett Preston, the last of the Preston family to live at "Greenfield".
