George J. Kanzelberger, 61, of Two Rivers, Victim
Found Lying in Pool of Blood on Lounge at His Riverside Cottage
TWO RIVERS- Mrs. Margaret Kanzelberger, 63, of 1514-24th St., is being held in Manitowoc County Jail without charge after her husband, George J. Kanzelberger, 61, retiring printing firm partner, died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital following blows received on the head, which she said she inflicted several hours earlier at a West Twin River cottage where he spent most of his time in recent years.
Mrs. Kanzelberger rapped at the home of a neighbor, Reginald Buyeske, of 2514 W. River St., adjacent to the cottage and other properties of the Kanzelbergers, at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, informing him that she had struck her husband and knocked him down and that he was bleeding badly. Given a key to cottage by Mrs. Kanzelberger, Buyeske called police and Office Martin Dahm was assigned.
Used Compresses
Officer Dahm, according to the police report released through Dist. Atty. Robert E. Koutnik early Wednesday morning, went to the Kanzelberger cottage known as "The Tub", which was the name of a boat Kanzelberger once owned, accompanied by Buyesek. Dahm rapped at the cottage door and then hollered. There being no response he used the key to enter the house. At his left Officer Dahm found Kanzelberger lying in a pool of blood on a lounge. While a doctor was being reached the police officer applied compresses in an effort to stop the bleeding. The City Emergency Vehicle then rushed Kanzelberger to the hospital, where he died shortly before 1 a.m.
The body of Kanzelberger was removed to the County Morgue at Manitowoc for an investigation to be conducted by Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner. His findings, it was learned, will form the basis of charges to be placed against Mrs. Kanzelberger, the former Margaret Kopf, a native of Germany, who came to this country in the early 1930s and was married to Kanzelberger, a widower, several years later.
Will Issue Warrant
Dist. Atty. Robert E. Koutnik said he would issue a warrant in the case after conferring with Chief John Brandt of the Two Rivers Police Dept. Wednesday afternoon, Koutnik declined to reveal the nature of the charge until he discussed details of the case more fully with Brandt.
Mrs. Kanzelberger is expected to be arraigned in Branch 2 of Manitowoc County Court at Manitowoc late Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.
Koutnik said an autopsy performed Wednesday morning showed that Kanzelberger suffered a severe and extensive skull fracture.
Severe Lacerations
Kanzelberger had three severe lacerations in the back of the head, his left eye was closed and swollen and there was swelling on the left side of the head as a result of the blows. The type of instrument used was not disclosed.
Police were told that it was nothing unusual for Kanzelberger to remain for days at a time at the cottage on property which he had planned to construct a riverside motel. It is the site of the former ice house of Two Rivers firms operating until some 20 years ago. Hot meals had been brought to him by his wife on numerous occasions, it was learned. Nearly five years ago Kanzelberger retired as a partner in the Malley-Kanzelberger Printing Co., now known as the Malley Printing Co.
Kanzelberger was born at Two Rivers Dec. 17, 1901, son of the late Michael and Mary Brunner Kanzelberger. He attended St. Luke Parochial School and as a youth worked at Schroeder Bros. Co. store in its grocery department. Later he began to work for the old Two Rivers Weekly Chronicle and for a short period was an employe of the former Brandt Printing and Binding Co. at Manitowoc. In October of 1924 he entered into partnership in the printing business with Albert F. Malley in the operation of the Malley-Kanzelberger Printing Co., retiring more that four years ago.
Has Three Sons
Kanzelberger was a member of Two Rivers Lodge No. 200, F. and A.M., and the Barney G. Lyman Chapter No. 116, Royal Arch Masons, of Two Rivers. For many years he also was a member of the Katzenjammer Club of Two Rivers.
In 1924, he married the former Daisy Dawley in Two Rivers,

who died early in 1932. Three sons, George J., James and Warren, of Manitowoc, were born to the union. Late in 1932 he married the former Margaret Kopf.
Besides his wife and the three sons, he leaves four sisters, Mrs. Frank Schultz, of Sheboygan, Mrs. John Mrotek, of Butte des Morts, Mrs. Wilfred Reinemann, of Porterfield, Wis., and Mrs. Norbert McDonald, of Two Rivers; two brothers, Leo, of Two Rivers and Richard, of Sheboygan Falls and nine grandchildren.
