After his father's death he worked in Washington, DC, at the Treasury Department, while studying law at Georgetown Law School.
On October 23, 1886, he committed suicide by shooting himself in his office at the Treasury Building. His remains were brought back to Decatur and buried in the family plot in the city cemetery in an unmarked grave.
