JOSEPH KLEIN (d. 1926)

DEATH COMES TO CITY TREASURER JOSEPH KLEIN AT SAN JOSE, CAL.,
AS HE SEEKS HEALTH THERE
TWO RIVERS, June 8—City Treasurer Joseph Klein, who left here a short time ago
for a visit in California, died last night at San Jose, his demise being due
to a complication of diseases and coming after several years of suffering. The
body will be returned to this city for burial but the funeral arrangements have
not been completed and will be announced later. Advised against making the
western trip because of his condition, the death of Mr. Klein while not
unexpected comes as a shock to relatives and friends.
Born at Two Rivers September 29, 1866 Mr. Klein would have been sixty at his
next birthday. He made the city his home practically all of his life. As a boy
he became an apprentice in the old Chronicle office and learned the printer
trade thoroughly. After three years he left for Superior where he became the
foreman of a newspaper office and worked for a number of years. He then gave up
his position and for six months made his home in California returning to this
state to locate at Milwaukee where he engaged in business with a friend.
Disposing of his interests in returned to Two Rivers and resumed work in the
shop where he had been an apprentice and later established a candy store where
the Schroeder Brothers store is now located. After his marriage to Emma Kumbalek,
which occurred May 25, 1896, he was appointed city clerk, a position which he
held for a number of years and later was employed at the Aluminum Goods company
plant where he had charge of the stock in the rolling mill. About two years ago
he was named city treasurer, a position which he held at the time of his death,
being on a leave of absence.
Mr. Klein was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Society, Holy
Name Society and was the secretary of St. Luke’s congregation. He was popular
with all classes of citizens.
Mr. Klein preceded her husband in death March 25 this year and surviving him are
four daughters and two sons, Colletta, Marie, Esther and Geraldine and Joseph and
Leo, all of this city; a brother John of LaCrosse and a sister, Mrs. Anton Walters
of San Jose, California with whom he was visiting at the time of his death.
