Lyman was well known as a man of strong convictions. This led him into a tender sympathy with the decendents of the slaves. He served his country during the Civil War enlisting Sep 2, 1862 at Galesburg as a Private in Co A, 77th Illinois Inf Regt and was discharged Jul 10, 1865 at Mobile AL. He was called by Mother Bickerdyke to procure cows for the use of the sick and wounded soldiers near Memphis, and in that he succeded. Futher evidence of his thoughtfulness and presence of mind as a soldier was shown by his ready action in grabbing in his arms a stack of guns as they were falling. In the discharge of the guns he received an ugly wound in the left arm but he saved the lives of others. Disability pension 1879.
