Hyrum Morris Buhanan 1911 ~ 2006

Hyrum Morris Buhanan passed gently away in his sleep on July 6, 2006 of natural causes.

Morris was born to Hyrum Smith Behunin and Vera Newberry Pendleton Behunin on October 27th, 1911 in Fremont, Utah.

He spent most of his early years in Wane County. He graduated from both Beaver High School and from the old 'Branch Agricultural College' with a teaching certificate. He later graduated with the first group to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from BAC (now Southern Utah University) in Cedar City, UT.

Morris was one of the Lord's most generous and noblest souls, a man utterly without guile. He excelled at everything he put his hand to. Those who knew him were always impressed with his Integrity, generosity, and kindness.

He married the great love of his life, Mary Cox, in the Saint George Temple on June 26th 1932 and made "Happily ever after" come true for 59 years with his sweetheart and five children. He was a wonderful father and a Great Teacher.

He taught in the Iron County School District for 43 years, truly loving his students and changing many lives. He became a legend at Cedar Breaks National Monument as the Chief Naturalist for 27 years, where his vast knowledge of animals, plants, geologic formations etc. were a tremendous asset. His ability to charm birds, squirrels and chipmunks out of their hiding places enchanted and amazed visitors. He discovered an entirely new variety of aphids which later was named after him. He also co-authored and did the photography for a book on wild flowers titled "LIVING COLOR" which won the Most Valuable Book of the Year award. His taxidermy and the trails he created are still a legacy being enjoyed at the National Parks. He enjoyed gardening, travel, hiking, photography, lapidary work, ballroom/square dancing, playing the harmonica and hunting.

Morris filled numerous LDS church positions, including a stake mission. He was a temple ordinance worker in Saint George with his wife for 8 years while health permitted.

He leaves behind him sons Dale Cox Buhanan (Lyudmyla) and Paul Morris Buhanan, and daughters Phyllis Topham (David O.), Nancy Bauer (Daniel L.)and Bonnie Terry (Brian V.). Also, 20 grandchildren and 33 1/2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Morris was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, his parents, two brothers - Wane Sherman Buhanan and Roe Smith Buhanan, and a sister; EllaVera "Elva" Buhanan Stewart.

He will be greatly missed. Friends and family members can pay their respects at a visitation to be held at Cannon Mortuary 2460 E Bengal Blvd. Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 9th from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday July 10, 2006 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. at the Glacial Park Ward 2675 East Mount Jordan Road, Sandy Utah.
