Donald R. Paonessa, 79, died Wednesday evening January 23, 2008 in the comfort of his home as he wished. He was surrounded with the love and support of his family during his illness.
Don attended St. Mary's Elementary School, Old South High and the University of Akron. Served as a Platoon Leader in Ohio National Guard, 37 Division K Co. Served as a Staff Sgt. in Korea with the 5th A.F. during the Korean War. Retired with 40 years seniority from the B.F. Goodrich as a Production Supervisor.
Preceeded in death by wife, Alice (1989); parents, Joseph and Clara; brothers, Alfred, Thomas, Guido; and sister, Anna. Survived by daughter, Linda Woods (Don Smith); granddaughter, Shawna DeCola (Alvaro); great-grandchildren, Sofia and Mateo DeCola; brother, Joseph Paonessa; sister-in-law, Genny Karder (Mike), Ruth Calvin (Bill); and many nieces and nephews. Also, survived by very special companion and caregiver Darlynn Clark.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank SUMMA Hospice Care and the Oncology unit of City Hospital for their wonderful care and support.
A special thanks and farewell to mentors and friends throughout the years; Y.M.C.A. Athletic Club from 1947 - 1982, Track & Raquett Club from 1982 -1990, and Bally's Total Fitness in Jackson Township 1990 to present.
Calling hours will be held at Anthony & Biscan Funeral Home, 4178 Massillon Road, (Corner of Massillon & Steese Rds in Green) Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery where VFW Post 3383 will conduct military services. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice in Donald's memory.
