Hindman Cicero "H.C." Douglas (sometimes spelled Douglass) was born December 26, 1860, most likely in Van Buren County, Arkansas. He was the first child and son of Jesse Douglass (of Missouri, born near St. Louis) and Elvira Susannah Sullivan (born in Perry County, Tennessee).
It is unclear exactly which city or town H.C. was born in as his death certificate says Little Rock, Arkansas; a bible record from his wife Turena (1895) says Van Buren County, Arkansas; the 1860 census enumerated July 20, 1860 shows his father Jesse and mother Elvira living in Walker Township in Conway County, Arkansas. Family records from other sources state he was born in Enders, Faulker Co., AR, however Faulker County, AR was formed in 1873 from Pulaski and Conway counties and therefore he could not have been born there as it had not yet been created when he was born Dec 26, 1860. The bible record from wife Turena seems to be the most contemporaneous with this event, and the ink used in the bible record appears to be the earliest used, therefore this is most contemporaneous and direct evidence we have of H.C.'s place of birth.
On our nation's birthday, July 4, 1887, H.C. and Turena Henderson received a marriage license to marry, and on July 7, 1887, were married in Medina County, Texas. Family records show they married in Bexar County, Texas, however the marriage record in my possession shows it was Medina County. The ceremony was performed by W.C. Newton.
In 1898, H.C. and Turena and their young children Myrtle, Karl, Vern, and Leslie boarded a train in Texas bound for California. After living in southern California a few years, in about 1901, the family moved to Oakland, California. In about 1918, H.C. and Turena moved near Sacramento in Galt, California. H.C. was a carpenter in his earlier years and later entered the poultry business. After a fruitful life of 82 years, on March 7. 1942, H.C. passed and was reunited with his creator.
H.C. and Turena Douglas' fruitful marriage produced the following children:
