Mrs. Anna Kries, County’s Oldest Resident, Dead
MANITOWOC—Mrs. Anna Koenig Kries, 102, oldest resident of Manitowoc County,
died Monday night at the Holy Family Hospital, where she had been a patient
the past three weeks.
For many years she has made her residence at the St. Marys Home for the aged.
Until a few years ago she retained all her faculties and did sewing and fancy
work without the aid of glasses.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kries will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday by the
Beduhn, Deja and Martin Inc., Funeral Home in Two Rivers and at 9 o’clock at
St. Luke Catholic Church in Two Rivers. The Rt. .Rev. Msgr. C. V. Hugo will
officiate and interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Two Rivers.
Born in Germany
Mrs. Kries, nee Koenig, was born in Germany, June 24, 1850 and when she was
22, came to America with her mother and the other six children in the family.
Eleven years later she was married to Peter Kries, the father of seven children
in Two Rivers. The couple and family then moved to St. Louis and spent 20
years in that city and also lived at Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Cincinatti, O. Later
the family returned to Manitowoc. Her husband died many years ago. Mrs. Kries
lived for 21 years at the home of her nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen
Gruman of 2707 Forest Ave., Two Rivers, and in 1945 moved to the St. Marys Home
for the Aged. A brother, Joseph Koenig, one of the founders of the aluminum
industry in Manitowoc and Two Rivers died in 1929. A sister, Bertha Koenig Weber,
died about seven years ago.
Outlived Step-Children
In her long span of 102 years Mrs. Kries had 28 stepgrandchildren, 49 great
stepchildren, and 12 great great stepchildren. She never had any children of
her own, but has outlived all seven of her stepchildren. John, who died in 1947
at the age of 87, was the last of them.
Her only survivors are nieces and nephews of the Koenig, Gruman, Bruhn and Hartel
families in this area.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Wednesday until time of services.
The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.
