James Avery, age 79 passed away on June 27, 2015. James was welcomed into this world by his parents, Earl and Thelma (Swindler) and older sister, Rita. He graduated from BGHS. While there he participated in FFA serving as chapter secretary and twice as president. He married Eileen Canterbury on July 27, 1958 Jim was a member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served as trustee for many years. Jim farmed with his father until he became a dispatcher for the Ohio Highway Patrol at the Walbridge Post. His job was interrupted by a draft notice from Uncle Sam. After basic training, he proudly served his country in Germany. There he was joined by his wife and infant son. Together, they enjoyed touring throughout Europe. Jim returned to farming after completing his service to his country, and also worked part time as a steel fabricator. Following retirement, Jim spent many happy hours in his workshop making custom furniture and miniature farm machinery. Winters were enjoyed in Haines City, Florida with in-laws and friends. Jim was active in local government, serving 24 years as a Plain Township Trustee, 13 years on the Mid-Wood Board of Directors and 18 years on the Mid-County Ambulance District Board, of which he was a charter member. He was also a founding member of the Lion's Club of Portage. Jim is survived by his wife, Eileen, sons: Jim, Jr. and Jeff (Shareen) Avery, daughter: Jenny Bechstein, grandchildren: Spencer and Cole Bechstein and Sara and Matthew Avery, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Rita Hines and granddaughter, Amanda. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11:00AM with visitation beginning at 10AM. Jim's cremated ashes will be interred later at Plain Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be gifted to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Christ United Methodist Church in Portage.
