It was during this period of time that Tom began his Real Estate Firm in Santa Monica. Due to the distance, Tom stayed in Santa Monica during the week and commuted home to El Cajon on the weekends. When Tom was expected home, Annie and the kids would hike up the hill near their home and would use Anna's opera glasses to see when Tom's train arrived at the station down below.

Like most men, Tom liked the ladies and Annie began to worry that his interests may become misplaced. At one point she thew him out, but shortly afterward Anne sent their daughter, Amber on the train to Santa Monica to tell Thomas to come back home.

Thomas was a man that didn't like junk, but instead was considered to be a man of good taste that bought the finest that he could within his means. His lovely wife, Anne, shared his good prudence and was willing to keep up with all the latest fads. What ever the newest fashion was Anna had it, ranging from clothing to the latest appliance, and the 'Society Pages' were always ready to report on their parties or travels.

Annie's door was always open to those who were in need. She filled her time working with wayward boys, and it was said that at different times Anne had allowed about 17 foster boys to stay at their home.
Letter sent to Annie Thorkelson dated October 28, 1935
Dear Mrs Thorkelson
Ever since coming to Covina I have heard of your splendid work with children. Only a few days ago one of the faculty said that you are among the best of the county mothers. I hope that Lloyd may remain with you indefinitely, for his progress has been so decided. It even extends to such items as combing his hair, clean fingernails, saying "excuse me," etc.
In the note of last week I did not mention that I always wish to keep in touch with Lloyd. Being self-dependent rather early, those of similar situation are children of particular interest.
When you are around the school, I hope that you can get around to see us. Your boy measures up with the best in subject matter, interests, attitudes, and everything essential.
In sincere appreciation, Lura T. Hixson

Anna Thorkelson's youngest brother, Jens Nelson had become a Druggist that resided with his wife, Mildred and two small children in Copley, Minnesota. When he became ill with pernicious anemia in December of 1917 the family traveled to California to Anna's home in Grenada Park to help restore Jens' failing health. They arrived by train on a Monday in December, but by the following Friday Jens had passed away at the age of 41, and his funeral was held on Christmas morning of 1917. Jens had been a member of the Masonic and Woodman fraternities and many thanks were given to the Masonic lodge for their useful assistance.

When Tom and Anna moved to Los Angeles County, their daughter, Amber attended Santa Monica High School where she met Wesley Foell. They were married in Venice City, California on June 13, 1914 and their first home was in Granada Park.

Tom and Anna remained close to her aging parents throughout their lives. They attended her parents 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary in October of 1921, and many other banquets that were given in their honor. By 1923 Martin and Sophia were now in their 80's and none of their children lived near them in Minnesota, so they came out west to live with their daughter and her family in Covina. During that time Thomas began building an enormous on Hollenbeck Street in Covina, that was surrounded by acres of citrus groves.

Martin Nelson was 90 years old when he died at his daughter, Anne Thorkelson's home in Covina, California on Monday, July 8, 1929. He was survived by his wife, Sophia who was in her 94th year, and he had been a member of the Lutheran church for seventy years.

The Society Pages were buzzing with the news that Mesdame Annie Thorkelson was having a "Three Occasion" event at her home on Hollenbeck Avenue in Covina that Fall of 1930. "Thirty-two guests were seated at the table that was attractively decorated in yellow button chrysanthemums, yellow candles and favors. Three cakes served as center pieces, and Mrs Sophia Nelson's cake was adorned with 95 candles."

The party was to celebrate Tom Thorkelson's 63rd birthday as well as Sophia Nelson's 95th birthday, and their neighbors wedding anniversary. Some of the guests listed were Messer Lloyd Thorkelson of Los Angeles, Messer Wesley, Jack and Richard Foell of Alhambra, Messer Fred and Mesdame Louise Stinson of Sawtelle, and Misser Curry Bachman of Long Beach. Two years later, Sophia died on October 18 of 1932 at her daughter, Annie Thorkelson's home in Covina, California.

In 1932 Lloyd left home and married February 18, 1932 to Evy Marie Newstrand. They resided in San Gabriel where he remained close to his aging parents and other family members.

After Prohibition ended in 1933, Wesley Foell opened a bar in El Monte, and his drinking led to a separation with Amber, who took their two boys and returned to her parents home in Covina. It was difficult for women to get a job in those days, but Amber did, and she became a very successful buyer for Henshley's Department Store that provided enough income for them to get a home of their own.

After 1940, Tom and Annie sold their large home in Covina and purchased a citrus grove in Arlington, Riverside County. that was called the "Sunshine Ranch." Then in February of 1945 their grandson, Jack Foell purchased the large citrus grove next to theirs that was located at 8930 Indian Ave, and the family resided there near his grandparents where they remained very close. Jack's daughter, Connie often made her way through the grove to visit her grandparents while collecting in her lunch box all the dead rodents and bugs that she found along the way, giving her mother and grandmother Annie quite a fright when they opened it.

Thomas John Thorkelson died February 19, 1949. Six months afterward his grandson, Jack sold his grove in Arlington to his mother, Amber Wood, and he moved to Venice, Calif. where Jack obtained his Real Estate license. It appears that after living with his grandfather, Tom, Jack pursued his career in real estate, and did very well with it, he even became President of the Real Estate Board and President of the Vox Club.

Anna Thorkelson stayed with her daughter, Amber, in Arlington where she survived her husband, Tom for another 15 years. They were both buried in San Gabriel Cemetery in California, where most of this family was interred..
