Here is part of an article on him entited 'Doc' West, Noted as Sportsman, Is Dead. It can be found in The Nonpareil on Dec 3,1938. My copy is too light to read the first half and post here in it's entirety. So anyone that wants it should get a copy. The readable parts mention that he was a great sportsman and loved the outdoors. It ends with the following -

What the boy scout learns today from his manual, "Doc" had gathered from experience. What we read from the glories of wild life in the past, "Doc" had enjoyed.
An incident in his life illustrates his real love for the outdoors. He was intimately acquainted with "Old Jules," hero, or villain, whichever way you look at it, of Mari Sandoz' famous book. Although the two were strikingly dissimilar in their attitude towards life, they found a common ground in their love of outdoors.
A voracious reader, and of scientific mind, he had an understanding of the fundamental truths of life. Had he cared to advertise his knowledge, he would have received public acclaim. Had he sought to accumulate wealth, he might have done so. But to him fame was a transitory nothingness, to be avoided rather than sought. Riches were of no value save for the happiness they brought. His pursuit was for a long life and fullness of living, and this he gained.
