Richard Louis Ahrens Sr. 81, of 4206 Niles Hill Road, passed away Thursday (Nov 20, 2014) at Olean General Hospital.

Born in Wellsville, NY, September 19, 1933, the son of Walter and Nina Dudley Ahrens, he was a graduate of Wellsville High School, Class of 1953, and had resided in Wellsville all his life with the exception of the 20 years spent as a career service man in the United States Navy.

Following his retirement from the Navy, Dick spent another 20 years as an operator of the Wellsville Water and Light Department. He was a longtime fireman with the Petrolia Hose Company and a member of Hornellsville Lodge #44, F& AM.

Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman, and especially enjoyed hunting on the Swale, and spending time at Smith Pond.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Donna and Walter Johnson, his brother, Robert Ahrens, as well as his nephew Kevin Johnson and his beloved grandson Lee Michael Ahrens in 1993. He was also predeceased by his best friend and brother-in-law, Neal Hallett.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hallett Ahrens to whom he was married Dec 25, 1955, his daughter, Elizabeth Marie Ahrens of Wellsville, his three sons, Richard Lee Ahrens of Wellsville, Gary Lynn (Robin) Ahrens of Olean and Michael David Ahrens of Tennessee, several grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other loved ones.
