Doris Rodman Jewett, well known for her work as a psychotherapist in the greater Portland area, died at home in West Linn on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004 of an agressive form of cancer. Doris was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Metolius, the second of two children born to teachers. Her family moved frequently between eastern Oregon and southern Idaho as her father's career changed from teacher to school superintendent. Doris graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, in 1947, and began her career as a caseworker in the Oregon State Department of Public Welfare. After earning a master's degree in social work from the University of Washington, she returned to Oregon to work at the State Department of Child Welfare. In 1960, Doris was employed at the Parry Center in Portland, the only residential treatment setting outside of the Oregon State Hospital. Doris married Stanley Jewett, Jr., in 1971. With her husband, a nationally recognized entomologist, the duo developed Northwest Biological Enterprises, a native plant nursery. Doris traveled to various parts of the world with her husband in searches for and the cataloging of collections of rare butterflies and moths. Mr. Jewett died in 1991. Doris' survivors are her husband's children, Stan Jewett III of West Linn, Meredith Jewett, Seattle and Nora Jewett of Austin, Texas; along with her two beloved Scottish terriers, Britty and Francesca. In 1980 Doris obtained registration as a clinical social worker and for 25 years maintained a professional practice in Lake Oswego. She was an Adjunct Professor at Portland State University and was appointed by the Oregon Supreme Court to the Oregon Bar Examiners Board for four years to help screen applicants to the Bar. In 1991, she joined the board of directors of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Foundation. Doris enjoyed travel, gardens and music. At one time in the 1960s she played the French horn in the orchestra of the Portland Opera. In recent years her most extensive trips abroad included Japan, the Czech Republic, and France. Doris will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by the many people of all ages whose lives she touched. Remembrances should go to the Nature Conservancy. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4 in Atkinson Memorial Church, located at 710 6th Street, corner of John Adams St., in Oregon City. A reception will follow.
