Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered his Civil War service with a commission of Captain, US Volunteers, and an assignment as an Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. He would go on to serve in that same duty first on the staff of Brigadier General William H. Emory, and then the staff of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. He as promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and on March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He was a great-great-grandson of Declaration of Independence Signer Benjamin Franklin.
