"Pfc. Jack Begg, 21, son of Mrs. Vivian Karr, 1109 17th Street was killed in action in Korea, July 30 (1950) according to a telegram received by his mother from Edward F. Whitsel, Adjutant General of the Army.

"Young Begg is the first Sioux Cityan reported killed in the Korean war.

"Pfc. Begg entered army service in January, 1949, and received his basic training at Camp Chaffe, Ark. He left the United States for occupation duty in Japan in August, 1949.

"Mrs. Karr said the last letter she received from her son was written July 12 from Tokyo. She quoted him as writing that he was leaving in two days for “you know where.”

"Jack Begg was born June 13, 1929, in Sioux City. He attended Central High School here. His father, John Begg, was killed in an automobile accident in 1931.

"Survivors are the mother and two sisters, Mrs. Paul Hoeppner of Arnolds Park, Ia. and Ruth Begg of Sioux City."
