James Grumann

Jim Grumann, age 87 died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.

Jim was born October 23, 1924 in Two Rivers, son of the late Stephen and Leona (Simonis) Grumann. He attended St. Luke's School and later Washington High School. Jim displayed an early interest in sports by playing in a city basketball league, on the Washington High School Raider football team, and the Two Rivers Ramblers football team. Jim was a member of the U.S. Air Force, and during WWII he flew 30 missions over Germany as a ball turret gunner in a B-17. He was wounded on the 30th mission and returned to the states. He remained active in the Air Force Reserve for 25 years until his retirement from the service.

On August 23, 1947, Jim married Doris Stipek at St. Luke Catholic Church in Two Rivers. They were married for 56 years. Jim and his brother, Bill, were owners of Two Rivers Tool and Specialty, a tool and die company. He was a member of the St. Luke's Athletic Council, served as President and remained active for 30 years. He was also a volunteer for many years delivering Meals on Wheels. Jim had a long time affiliation with fraternal organizations, such as the Eagles Club, and the Elks Club.

The Kiwanis Club of Two Rivers had been of special interest to him, being a member for 45 years, President in 1968, and Lt. Governor in 1984. He spent many years as inter-club chairman, often inviting his sons-in-law to the golfing and bowling events. Jim was also affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, 40 et 8, Disabled American Veterans, and Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Fourth Degree Knight. Jim also served for many years in the color guard for the VFW and the American Legion.

Sports had always been an important part of his life. He was a very loyal Packer fan, having had season tickets long before Lambeau Field was built, and he rarely missed a game. His business sponsored numerous sports teams, and as early as 1948, Jim sponsored and played on a basketball team in the Two Rivers Industrial League. He also enjoyed playing softball for Grumann's for 27 years, played dartball for many years, and golfed as well.

In 1961, Jim and friends founded Grumann's Athletic Club. The Club sponsored bowling teams, youth football teams, softball and little league baseball; also men's and women's volleyball and men's slowpitch softball teams. Jim also headed the annual softball tournament for 24 years.

The Club made donations to the Two Rivers Junior Ramblers, the Professional Police Association, the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans, and the Association of Developmentally Disabled.

Because of his involvement in sports in the Two Rivers area, he was honored in 1996 by being enshrined in the Lakeshore Area All Sports Hall of Fame. Later, he became a devoted fan of his grand children's sports teams, traveling to Green Bay, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, and Minneapolis to see them play.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Gail and Dale Hodek, De Pere; Jan and Al Meisel, Hartland; grandchildren: Tim (Tina) Hodek, Kristen Hodek, Ryan (Celia) Meisel, Mark (Erin) Meisel, Todd (Jackie) Meisel; and great-grandchildren: Jackson, Andrew, and Nicholas Hodek; and Ava and Mason Meisel.
