Violet Sly, 81, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at North Village, Moberly, Mo., where she resided for two years. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Million-Taylor-Patton Funeral Chapel, Moberly, Mo., with burial in Higbee Cemetery, Higbee, Mo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was born Violet Grimes Aug. 6, 1927, in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Sly was a resident of Randolph County, Mo., for more than 60 years and was a graduate of Moberly Junior College, where she worked as a cook for a few years. She was a 30-gallon blood donor for American Red Cross and in earlier years worked at Reed's Corner and Dorsey's cafes in Moberly, Mo. She and her late husband Noble owned and operated Red's Grill and N and W restaurants, both in Moberly. She attended several churches over the years in the Moberly area and was a God-fearing woman. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Sly of Madison, Mo., and Clay (Deanne) Sly of rural Moberly; daughters, Janet Johnson of Boonville, Mo., Opal (Clarence) Pagel of Altamont, Donna Jones of Mason, Dora Sly of Effingham and Debbie Welch of Moberly, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noble "Red"; sons, David and Marvin Sly; daughter, June Sly; granddaughter, Debra Sly; sister, Dorthea McNeece; and brothers, Albert and Martin Knapp.
