Donn W. Hayes of Springfield and Old Salem Chautauqua Park in Petersburg died at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Hospital. He was born in 1918 in Carlinville, the son of Walter Emerson and Donna Rhodes Hayes.
Mr. Hayes graduated from Springfield High School. While a student, he co-founded the Vachel Lindsay Club, the first society to honor the Springfield poet. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Illinois, a Ph.D. degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., and did post-doctoral study at Boston and Harvard universities.
He was associated with his stepfather, J.T. Stockton, in the management of the Illinois Business College and as an examiner of disputed documents. He once testified in a suit against Ferdinand de Mara, known as "The Great Imposter."
A veteran of World War II, he served as principal of Fort Brooke Institute, San Juan. Federal service included positions as training officer and honorary fellow in civil defense, National Staff College, and cartographic engineer, Department of State. He advised President Truman on the preservation of documents in the presidential library at Independence, Mo.
Dr. Hayes was head of the Department of Education, Lindenwood College; professor and registrar of Boston University; visiting professor at Western and Southern Illinois universities. He taught psychology at Springfield College in Illinois and was a member of its Board of Trustees. Dr. Hayes also served as manager of communications for Allis-Chalmers, management consultant with the Illinois Department of Personnel, and training coordinator, Illinois Department of Revenue.
Elected to scholarly societies in the fields of business, journalism, education and classical languages, Dr. Hayes was author of numerous publications and was associate editor of "The Journal of Education." He was affiliated with the American Association of College Registrars and the American Society for Training and Development.
He was a verger of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, a member of the Springfield Noon Lions Club, and was a 50-year member of Lerna Lodge 788 AF&AM.
Services at Bisch Memorial Home. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
