"Uncle Ira" was a lifelong resident of Barton County. He and Blanche Guthrie House were married in Carthage, Missouri, on April 28, 1929.

He was owner and operator of the Lamar O'Joy Bottling Works. He also was involved in real estate, and he renovated or constructed homes in Lamar. He was a member of the Lamar First Christian Church, as well as the Lamar Chamber of Commerce.

Pastors Phil Gardner and Maurice Strater officiated at Uncle Ira's funeral. Lois DeMaire sang "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow," accompanied by Fenton Day, organist.
