Glenn Lamar Baker, 71, of Belmont, was a son to the late Glenn and Ruth Brewer Baker.
Lamar was a graduate of Cramerton High School (Class of 1961). He was a graduate of Belmont Abbey College with a degree in Accounting. He went to work for the Internal Revenue Service for four years in the Gastonia office. He got his C.P.A. license and started his own business in the old Belmont Radio Station in 1967, Lamar Baker C.P.A, Belmont. He ran that office until his death. He had a very successful business over the years and employed four wonderful ladies to help run the office. God blessed him with wonderful clients.
While with the I.R.S, each State was asked for workers to take a test to qualify to work for the I.R.S. in Washington, D.C. Two workers from every state were to be chosen to work on the first computer developed for the government. Lamar and another man were chosen from North Carolina. He was very successful at programming the 360 Computer that filled a huge building in the early development. Lamar loved the job but longed to go back to the South and live a more peaceful life in Gaston County, where he could start his own business and be near family and friends and eventually have a family and let them grow up in a wonderful place.
Lamar was very civic-minded. He was Commissioner for the Town of Cramerton for 16 years. He was a former member of Life Church (Cramerton Church of God). He loved his church and served as a Sunday School teacher for four years. He loved gospel music and sang with three of his church friends in a quartet during his college days. He is a member of South Point Baptist Church, Belmont. He gave freely to people that needed a helping hand and he supported the Little Red School House for many years to help children in need of glasses or medications. He loved his family dearly and he loved to travel. One of the great remembrances of Lamar was to listen to the stories of his experiences of growing up in Cramerton with his classmates. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and clients. He was a fine Christian man and known for his lively, upbeat nature that made many love him.
