A naturalized US citizen (his father, Ted [Teodoro] Bergan, b France, immigrated to Milwaukee, USA c 1890), Henry Bergan died aged 43 of stomach cancer, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His mother was Elizabeth Bergan.

He was survived by his widow, Diva Reis Bergan (a Brazilian citizen, m 1922), by his son, Henrique Reis "Harry" Bergan (1923-2004), of Morretes, Parana, Brazil; and by his brother, George H. Bergan (1901-1970) of Sao Paulo. A younger brother, Joseph Peter Bergan [FG# 147888958], was killed in an industrial accident in Sao Paulo in 1925.
