Mary Jane "McKnight" Misener was born July 14, 1823, in Pennsylvania to James Wilkinson McKnight and Eunice "Dodd" McKnight. She married Benjamin Misener on July 10, 1849 in Linn, Iowa. They had eight children: Orrell Edwina, Westley Herschel, Alonzo James, Mary Mahala, Joseph Emerson Harrison, Eddie Eunice, Benjamin Franklin and Rufus Emerson. Mary was living in Kansas from about 1862-1865, around the time when pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces clashed along the Kansas-Missouri borders. The decade called "Bleeding Kansas". Mary died Jan 22, 1897 in Vernon County, Missouri, at the age of 73.
