Thomas was a member of Co. C of Wisconsin's Third Regiment Infantry - reorganized. He entered service from Union Grove, Wis., on Sept. 5, 1861. He was taken prisoner, along with many others of his unit, at Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 18, 1863. He and four other Racine County men - John R. Schofield, Chauncy S. Chapman, Lemuel McDonald, and Joseph Leach - were all taken to Libby prison and later to Danville prison. The five, along with several others, escaped from Danville prison. The five Racine County men and two Minnesota men made their way back to Union lines. After a short furlough, Thomas and the other Racine County men returned to their unit. Thomas was mustered out Oct. 13, 1864, when his term expired.
