JOHN E. ALLEN, 10/20/2004 -

John Erby Allen of Auburn died Oct. 11, 2004, in Federal Way. He was 90.

Born Nov. 23,1913, in Commerce, Okla., he married Neva L. Elmore on Nov. 22, 1934 in Commerce, Okla.

John & Neva were two of the original "OKIES" who left Oklahoma for the Golden State of California during the depression. He enjoyed retelling how they would travel until the money ran out, and stop & work until they had enough money to go a little further, filling the old car with water at every town, and keeping the engine running with, as he told it, chewing gum & shoe laces. His first job in Calif., was driving a tractor for 50 cents a day, and a house to live in.

John was a great fixer, & always believed he could improve anything mechanical & he usually could. He received an award while working at Douglas Aircraft Co., in Los Angeles, because he found a more efficient way to run their parts shop.

He loved music. In his teen years, he played in a Western Band, in & around his hometown. He loved to sing & accompany himself on the guitar, he also played the harmonica.

Having finished only the 4th grade, he was a self-educated man. Reading all kinds of books, he taught himself carpentry, mechanics, drafting, & blueprint drawing. He drew plans & build by himself, 2 houses for his family.

John became a Christian in 1947 & by 1950 felt called into the ministry. He attended a Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Ark., where he finished his grade & high school work. He then attended Howard Payne College, in Brownwood, Texas.

He pastored in Arkansas & Texas before returning to California. In California he began mission work in Mendota, Inglewood, & North Hollywood, before pastoring in Taft & Oroville.

In 1992, he and Neva moved to Puyallup, Washington, to be near their family. They became members of Sunrise Baptist Church in Puyallup. After Neva's death, John moved to Auburn, but continued to attend Sunrise Baptist Church in Puyallup as long as his health allowed.

He is survived by a daughter, Betty Duffer of Auburn, 2 grandchildren & 2 great-grandchildren.
