Mesa, Ariz. - John Dennis Dafoe, age 64, of Mesa, Ariz., died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Ky. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Valley City, N.D. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday morning. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Valley City. Born April 3, 1943, in New Rockford, N.D., he grew up in Valley City, N.D. He was the band director in Hecla and Groton, S.D., and in 1977 he joined the faculty at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., where he later became Director of Bands and President of the SD Bandmasters Association. He left Northern State in 1991 and relocated to Mesa, Ariz., to be closer to his parents. Prior to his death, he became self-employed, allowing him to travel frequently to visit his family. Surviving are his wife, Darlene Dafoe; daughters Connie (Gavin) Rueb and Kim (JD) Bawek, son Rob (Cathy) Dafoe and six grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Avis (Tom) Kinkhammer, Peggy (Dale) Koppelman, Carroll (Ken); many nieces and nephews; stepchildren Lori (David) Layton and Nicole (Gary) Simmons and families. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Art and Nora Dafoe. Funeral arrangements by the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home of Valley City, N.D.
