Susanna "Susan" Bell was born about 1757 in Orange, Orange County, Virginia, the first child of William and Mary Bell. She had ten siblings, namely: Elizabeth, John Miller, James Miller, Polly, William, Sally, Henry, Thomas, Peggy, and Kitty. She died in 1834 in Prospect Hill, Madison County, Virginia. When she was 15, she married Francis Madison, son of James A. Madison, Sr and Eleanor Rose "Nellie" Conway, on 29 Oct 1772 in Orange County, Virginia.
About 1780, her husband, Francis, built a story and half home 1/2 mile north of the Rapidan River (west of present day US Route 15) where Susan spent the rest of her life. She died in 1834, following her husband and 3 of her children in death.
