Mr. Agnew, a native of Pulaski, Va., had been a resident of Norfolk since 1948.
He retired as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service.
He served on active duty during World War II and as the commanding officer of
the Selective Service Division 5-1. Following his active military service he was
an agent for Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company for 30 years. He was a
graduate of the College of William and Mary Class of 1935, a member of the Phi
Kappa Tau Fraternity and the College of William and Mary Association of 1775. He
also was an elder and chief usher in Knox Presbyterian Church and was the past
president of the Norfolk Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; past
president of the Edgewater Association; a member of the Pioneer Kiwanis Club;
the Retired Officers Association; the Reserve Officers Association and the
Military Order of the World Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Biggs Agnew; three daughters, Peggy Jane Wood
of Aylett, Va., and Betsy Anne Brewer and Nancy Watson Hurst, both of Norfolk;
three grandchildren, David Wayne Holder of Richmond, Cpl. James Lee Duncan Jr.,
USMC, and Andrea Lynn Irvin of Norfolk.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Knox Presbyterian Church by
Dr. Melvin S. Hester. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with military
honors. Friends may join the family at Cox Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight
for visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart/Lung Transplant
Patient Emergency Fund of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, 600 Gresham Drive,
Norfolk 23507.
