Sergeant Scott Lunger was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Myrtle Street and Lyon Street at approximately 3:15 am.

He stopped the vehicle for driving erratically. As he approached the vehicle an occupant opened fire, fatally wounding him. Another officer on scene of the stop returned fire as the vehicle fled. The vehicle was found abandoned a short time later. The subject was located and taken into custody suffering from gunshot wounds.

Sergeant Lunger had served with the Hayward Police Department for 15 years. He is survived by his two daughters.

He is the fourth officer from the Hayward Police Department to have been killed in the line of duty. Two officers from the California State University Hayward Police Department have also been killed in the line of duty.

According to the Mercury News, Scott had said that "he would patrol the streets for free if he could."

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29th from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Boulevard in Hayward. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 30th at 10:00am at the Oracle Arena, 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland. The funeral will be followed by private interment ceremony.
