Jabez was the son of Capt. Nathan Baldwin and Elizabeth Ford.

On Mar 24, 1755 in Newtown, CT he married Mary Peck.

Their children were Heth, Mary, Sarah, Betty, and Amial.

One book lists their last child as Anna, but birth and death records list it as son, Amial, born Jul 10, 1766 and died Jun 25, 1773 in Newtown, CT. The book of births in Connecticut pre-1870 lists Sarah as Mary. This is a mistake because Mary is also listed and she hadn't died.

His wife Mary died in 1770.

On Aug 30, 1770 in Newtown, CT he married Judith Brace, daughter of Elisha and Judith Brace.

Their children were Lucinda (died 1774), Nathan, Emmiel (died 1775), John, Lucinda, Lucia, Marcia, Elisha, and Charlotte.

Jabez, a man of unusual ability and courtly manner, was fitted to fill the high social position he held or in later years to handle the hardships of pioneer life. The depreciation in Continental money and the loss of a ship he was part owner of greatly reduced his fortunes. Although he still owned a house on Newtown Street, he couldn't live in the manner in which he was accustomed. So he was induced to seek a new home in Upper Coos, whose beauty and fertility were glowingly described probably by his son Heth who had moved there a year or two before.

On March 13, 1788, with his wife and children Nathan, John, Lucinda, Lucia, and Marcia he left Newton and made his way upriver to Stratford. In January, 1790, he located on the the place known as "Baldwin Homestead". He erected a frame house with lumber brought up from Guildhall, VT. This was the first frame house in that part of the country.

Children Elisha and Charlotte were born in Stratford.

In 1803, while he was away, his family caught smallpox. His wife sent a letter informing him that the family had come down with smallpox and that he should stay in Lancaster where he was visiting. Instead, he returned home, caught smallpox and died. He appears to have been the only one in the family who died of smallpox.

Age: 70yrs

Cause of Death: Smallpox

NOTE:

Upon his eldest son, NATHAN, devolved the care of the large family. He possessed great intellectual ability, became prominent in town affiars, and was several times elected to the legislature. He was appointed judge of the Court of Sessions in 1821. He married, first, Kate Schoff; second Susan Bundy. His last years were passed in Piqua, Ohio, where he died in 1867. He must have gone to live with or visit daughter Catherine who had married Joseph James in Stratford in 1846. He was from Ohio and they moved there. Catherine died there in 1886, and husband Joseph in 1883 and are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. I can't find a burial for Nathan either in NH or in OH.
