Elfrida Pauline Karlsen was born on October 28, 1895 at Tromso, Norway to Karl and Ingeborg ( Olsdatter ) Hansen. It was in the early years of the 1900's, that she decided to move to America, where Freedom seemed to be a promise. At the age of 19, Elfrida left Trondheim Harbour, Norway on October 27, 1914. Her destination was Hitchcock, Spink Co., South Dakota. She was traveling on the Steamship " United States ". Elfrida came through Ellis Island, New York and from there to Hitchcock, Spink Co., South Dakota. When she arrived in Hitchcock, Spink Co., South Dakota she went to work on a farm, and that's when she met and fell in love with a young man who had moved there from Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin by the name of Rudolph August Grundmann. They were married on January 26, 1916 in Frankfort, Spink Co., South Dakota. They farmed for many years and during this time, they had four children: Helen, Mabel, Clara and Ralph.
