Emma Antoinette "Sis" Warnke, 87, passed away January 4, 2006, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Mrs. Warnke was born April 21, 1918, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Otto B. Pohl Sr. and Emma E. (Schellmann) Pohl, both preceding her in death. In 1945, She married Merlin "Pee Wee" Warnke, who passed away in 1976. She was a graduate St. Peter's High School and Warrensburg State Teachers College. In 1959, she and her family moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she engaged in a successful career of teaching, coaching, business owner and avid Senior Olympian. After retirement from teaching and operating a small danceware shop, she participated in county, state and national Senior Olympics events, to include the World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. For her accomplishments, she received numerous awards. In 1986 she was the first woman inducted into the Las Cruces Sports Hall of Fame. In 1990 she was recognized as one of New Mexico's Outstanding Women. In 1997 she received the Arizona Sports-Women's Hall of Fame Award. In 2003 she was awarded the Senior Olympics 25 Year Heritage Award. In 2000 she was featured in a book release entitled "It's Never Too Late!" Personal Stories of Staying Young Through Sports" by Gail Kislevitz. She was member of the National, New Mexico and Las Cruces Education Associations. She was a member and past president of two local teaching sororities, Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Kappa Iota. Survivors include four children: Merlin Parker "Buddy" Warnke Jr. and spouse Paula, Tucson, Arizona, Elizabeth "Betty" Burgess and companion Rick Powell, Mary A. Wilcox and spouse Jeff, Michele "Mickey" Self and spouse Kevin, Las Cruces, New Mexico; five grandchildren: Brian Wilcox, Brad Burgess, Dena Burgess, Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sandra Moulton and spouse Erik, Durango, Colorado, Kiki Hardy, Tucson, Arizona; one great-granddaughter: Riley Parker Moulton, Durango, Colorado. Other survivors include: sister-in-law, Jane (Pohl) Stumpe, nephews and nieces; Bill Pohl Jr., James Pohl, Richard Pohl, Carole Hagood, Robert Pohl, Margaret Steinmetz, Judy Miller and Lisa Prenger, all of Jefferson City, Missouri. Two brothers, William F. Pohl Sr. and Otto B. "Bud" Pohl Jr., both of Jefferson City Mo., also preceded her in death. Services were held Jan. 6, 2006, with burial at Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Memorials made to charity of choice.Published in the NewsTribune on 2/8/2006.
