Navy IDs SEAL who died while training in pool at Va. base

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Navy has identified a SEAL from New York City who died while training in a swimming pool at a base in Virginia.

The Navy says 32-year-old Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Seth Cody Lewis of Queens was assigned to an East Coast-based Special Warfare Unit.

Lewis and another SEAL were found unresponsive Friday at the bottom of the Combat Swimming Training Facility at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. Personnel use the facility for fitness training.

Lt. David Lloyd tells media outlets that the second SEAL remains in critical condition.

Lloyd says an investigation is continuing.

Lewis served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2001 to 2005. He enlisted in the Navy in December 2006.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Naval Special Warfare Group TWO released Saturday the name of the SEAL who died during training accident.

Special Warefare Operator 1st Class (SEAL) Seth Cody Lewis, who was assigned to an east coast-based Special Warfare Unit died as the result of an accident while conducting physical fitness training in a pool at the Combat Swimmer Training Facility on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story April 24, according to a press release.

A second seal was injured during the training accident and is listed in critical condition at a civilian medical facility.

The two SEALs were found unresponsive at the bottom of the pool by service members assigned to the facility. Both members were transported to civilian medical facilities by civilian emergency responders.

Lewis was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to Sentara Leigh.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and teammate, Seth,” said Capt. Pete Vasely, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Group TWO. Seth was a consummate professional, fierce warrior, and teammate and friend to many of us in the Naval Special Warfare community who had perseverance and determination, making him an outstanding SEAL. Our hearts go out to the Lewis family, friends, and teammates in this time of grief.”

Special Warfare Operator First Class (SEAL) Seth Cody Lewis enlisted in the United States Navy in December 2006 after having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2001-2005.

Upon completion of Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Training in Coronado, Calif. in 2007 with BUD/S class 265, he transferred to an East Coast-based Special Warfare Unit in Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va. where he was stationed until his death on April 24, 2015.

SO1 Seth Lewis is 32 years old and hails from Queens, NY.

Lewis has made multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning the Bronze Star with Combat Valor; Purple Heart; U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Valor; the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Valor and other campaign and service medals.

Lewis is a loving husband, friend, and son-in-law, survived by his wife Kristy and beloved dogs Baby, Kona and Lyla.
