405 Hillrise Drive, Jonesborough, TN passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Simmons was a native of Milligan, TN and lifelong resident of Johnson City, TN. She was a faithful member and performed her Christian duties at both Friendship and Thankful Baptist Churches as a choir member, youth choir director, Sunday School and Bible School teacher.

She was a graduate of Langston High School and Swift Memorial Junior College, Rogersville, TN and furthered her education at East Tennessee State University and University of Tennessee of Knoxville. She was active in Civil Rights Action helping to bring about the desegregation of Johnson City Public School System. Mrs. Simmons was appointed to the Citizens Advisory Committee by the late Honorable Edward Backus in the late sixties, worked in the school system and as an advocate for community development. She served as a Director at the former Bertha B. Ellis Girls Club and community kindergarten for several years. After thirty-five years of dedicated service as a Family Resource Specialist, she retired from Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency - Head Start Program where she was fondly known by the pre-school children as "the Head Start Lady".

Mrs. Simmons often shared her thoughts, memories and perspectives of life through her talent of art and poetry. She was privileged to have a favorite piece of her poetic work published by the National Libraries of Congress in The Joy That Follows. Mrs. Simmons was a blessing to those in need through her acts of kindness and possessed an interest in the promotion of the education of young people. She will be especially remembered for her enduring love and commitment to her entire family.

She is survived by her dedicated husband of 58 years, Linnard N. Simmons; two daughters, Deborah L. Simmons-Grey (Daryl) and Pier A. Font; eight grandchildren, Mia R. Jamison (Benny); Portia L. Font; Micaela Y. Font; Monique L. Logan, Los Angeles, CA; Donald W. Logan, II (Angel Monique), Baton Rouge, LA; Darrian L. Grey; Brittany C. Grey; Dionte J. Grey. Six great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Preceding Mrs. Simmons in death are one son, James Linnard Simmons, one great-grandson, Adarius D. Gaitor ,three sisters - Glenna Frances Vaught, Lullene A. Vaught and Estelle L Vaught, Mother and Father - Walter and Gertrude (Trent) Vaught
