The third child of Duffield and Annie Harrield, Bertha Nathaniel experienced and lived the life of a "Grand Lady" -an Educator, Counselor, Philanthropist, Nurse and Mother.

The have a brief moment of reflection on the 103 years Bertha shared with the world and reliving her past, the family envisions her as a brilliant young girl growing up in the Houston County community as a student in her early development years at Mount Olive Colored School, a training school made possible by land and building donations provided by her famous grandfather, Mr Alexander Davis. Bertha graduated Valedictorian of her Senior Class and attended Prairie View Agriculture & Mechanical College in Prairie View, Texas and Mary Allen College in Crockett, Texas studying nursing and business administration in the early 1900's. She was the first Director of Nursing at GL Prince Hospital in Crockett.

There were her days of living in Dallas, where she met her first husband, Andrew L Jefferson,Sr, later moving to Houston, Texas. She later returned to her home cit of Crockett, Texas in the early 1950's where she trained her children with her second husband, Alton Nathaniel, an incredibly talented home builder who preceded Bertha in death during the summer of 1965.

Bertha was a long term member of St Luke's Baptist Church where she played the piano for Sunday School. In addition to a long term career in nursing, Bertha was an Independent Insurance Executive and Notary. She volunteered at the home care and hospice centers in Crockett, playing and singing hymns on Christmas Day to the Senior Citizens, as well as, delivering meals to the Sick and Shut-in Citizens in her community during Thanksgiving.

During her later years, this incredible lady gave the majority of her life helping and supporting people to create positive results in Crockett where she was known by many as the "Unofficial City Mayor." Although her life of 103 years were charted and navigated through many years of challenges, she was never mindful of the color of one's skin. Bertha was beautiful, well poised and exceptionally intelligent.
