John was born Oct 10, 1941 in Lycoming Co. Pa, the youngest of 7 children. John liked to be called J.B. He enjoyed the sport of hunting. John was a 10 yr. veteran. He joined the Marines in 1958. After completing his service he got and was out only 1 month when he said (quote) "I just can't stand civilian life!" He enlisted in the Army in 1961 and his first tour of duty was with the 101st Airborne Div. Ft. Campbell, Ky. August 2, 1962, in a chapel at Ft. Campbell John married the former Yvonne Hughes of Lewisberry, Pa. In March of 1964 John was sent to Okinawa where he was with the 173rd Airborne Div. In 1965 the 173 was sent to Vietnam. This was John's first tour of duty in Vietnam. From there he was sent to Germany (1966) but returned for his second tour of duty in Vietnam Nov.1967,and was again with the 101st Airborne Div. John was wounded Feb. 15, 1968 when he unhesitatingly devoted himself to the aid of numerous wounded men laying in the field by going out time and again after them with total disregard for himself. Okinawa where he was with the 173rd Airborne Div., IN 1965 the 173rd was sent to Vietnam. This was John's first tour of duty in Vietnam. From there he was sent to Germany (1966) but returned for a second tour of duty in Vietnam in November of 1967, and was again with the 101st Airborne Div. John was wounded on February 15, 1968 when he unhesitatingly devoted himself to the aid of numerous wounded men laying in the field by going out time and again after them with total disregard for himself. For this effort he was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star Medal for Gallantry....Again on April 28th, 1968 John and his company were engaged in combat operations in the North West of HUE, when he saw that his team leader and point man were pinned down, John deliberately drew enemy fire to save the lives of his own men. He was Mortally wounded by enemy fire.
Posthumously, John Gingery was awarded the Purple Heart (2), the Bronze Star with V for Valor (2) South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Vietnamese Merit Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutists Badge, Expert with Badge with Rifle Bar and the Grit Award.
John is buried with Yvonne Gingery in the Emmanuel Cemetery, Lewisberry, York County PA. He was 26 years old.
