The wife of Philip Mertz who died in Freeburg was always called Eva, or Anna Eva or sometimes Eve. They baptized children together at Longswamp Reformed Church in Longswamp Township, Berks County and later at Zion (Morr's) Church in Freeburg. They were named together as sponsors at Longswamp baptisms numerous times.

When Philip died in about 1803, he named his wife Eve in his will. She survived him and was listed, as Eva, in the 1810 Census.

It is just a guess when she was born based only on the idea that she had her first child possibly in 1752 and seems to have been married by 1770. It is also just a guess when she died but clearly it was after the 1810 Census, probably not too much thereafter.

It is not known where she was buried. Probably she was buried with her husband on their Freeburg farm but since several of their children were buried at St. Peter's in Freeburg, it seems fair to place her there.

The big question about her though is her maiden name. It is not known.

Ralph Fraley Martz who wrote a book "The Martzes of Maryland" and said so many things about so many of this name with so little evidence — said in his book her name was Rosemann. That assertion was picked up by Charles A Fisher, noted Snyder County genealogist, without appropriate fact-checking.

Eva's husband Philip was often confused with a different man named John Philip Mertz whose mother was, in fact, Anna Maria Rosemann. Those Mertzes were of the Lutheran religion while Philip and Eva were Reformed. (Yes, maybe she converted after their marriage.) But since there is absolutely no evidence suggesting any such maiden name for her, it is probably likely that Ralph Fraley Martz just got his notes scrambled one day. It wouldn't be the only thing he said that turned out not to be true.
