He was the son of Howard E. and Charlotte (Copsey) Carpenter, Sr. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Harold Adams. On Nov 17, 1956, in Jay Co., IN, he married Charlotte Copsey, who survives in New Breman.
Also surviving are six sons: Thomas (Melissa), St. Marys, Terry (Dixie), Dallesport, WA, Theodore (Jane Kill), Celina, Timothy, Columbus, John (Jessica), Richland Hills, GA; and Mark, New Bremen; four daughters: Patricia (Michael) Gavi, Jamestown, CA, Julie (Dennis) Parent and Christine (David) Ring, both St. Marys, and Angela (Brett) Yahl, New Bremen; a brother, Jack (Judy) Copsey, St. Marys; three sisters: Sandra Henkle and Victoria (Jeff) Hardeman, both St. Marys, and Sally (Albert) Harruff, Spencerville; a brother-in-law, Norbert (Rosemary) Ricker, St. Marys; two sisters-in-law: Millie (Richard) DeVore, Antioch, TN, and Dorothy (Don) Springer, Celina; and nineteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two grandchildren: Suzanne Carpenter and Wyatt Yahl; and a great-grandson, Andrew Carpenter.
A graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School in 1949, he was a veteran of the United States Army, having served 1.5 years in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, St. Marys, after 42 years of service. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, American Legion Post 323 and VFW Post 9289, all St. Marys. He was a Boy Scout Leader for 12 years and enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially cycling, canoeing and hiking. He made three memorable Boy Scout trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Golf was a retirement hobby, along with spending time with his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Marys, with the Rev. Barry Stechschulte officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, St. Marys, with military rites.
