Private, Army, Company G, 8th Minnesota Infantry - died of disease at Fort Abercrombie, Dakota Territory. Upon closure of Fort Abercrombie in 1877 the remains of the 90 persons interred there were removed to Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory. His remains were again moved and re-interred at the Little Bighorn National Cemetery (which is now known as Custer National Cemetery near Crow Agency) in Montana on 6 March 1905.
Through these removals, the quartermaster mis-spelled David's surname as it should be Cronin. Sadly, in response to my request to the Custer National Cemetery to replace this marker with the correct surname, I received the follwing email:

Dear Diane:

Thank you for your letter of April 6, 2008 requesting assistance to correct the listing of Private David C. Cronan, Company G, 8th Minnesota Infantry interred in Section A, Grave 501, and to replace his headstone to reflect his correct name "David C. Cronin".

We corrected the listing for Private David Cronin as you requested, and I have notified the appropriate contacts that have the Custer National Cemetery Interment Register available on-line on their respective websites to make the necessary changes. I regret however, that we are unable to
replace his Civil War style headstone because it is a protected Historic Structure (NPS-LIBI HS-0037) determination made on October 15, 1966 in our List of Classified Structures and as such is "Contributing to the National Significance" as defined in the 1966 Historic Preservation Act (LCS I.D. #23060).

Thank you again for sharing your concerns and letting us know about the correct spelling of Private David C. Cronin. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

John A. Doerner
