Adolphus Gamble Bonner was born October 22, 1917, and raised in rural Georgia, graduating from Tyus High School in 1934 and marrying his childhood sweetheart, Hazel Walker Bonner, in 1937.
He served in WWII as an artilleryman in the US 5th Army under Gen Mark Clark, and is a veteran of the American campaigns in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster (indicating he was wounded twice) and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Battle Stars.
After a long recuperation in Augusta from injuries sustained in the war, he returned to Roopville and then to Chicago, IL, to attend school in aviation electronics. Dolphus worked at Lockheed in Marietta as an electronics technician, retiring in the 1980’s after a career servicing airlifters including the C-130 Hercules, C5-A and C-141 Starlifter. In Marietta he was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Civitan Club, and the Men’s Garden Club. He was an avid vegetable gardener and grew prize-winning roses, winning multiple ribbons and silver awards in rose competitions.
After retiring from Lockheed he and Hazel bought the Walker family farm in Roopville where he again enjoyed gardening and roses. He was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Cattleman’s Association. He enjoyed many trips with the Cattleman’s Association.
He is preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 76 years, Hazel Walker Bonner, his parents, Lon M. Bonner and Annie Margarite Morris Bonner, his brothers Zaddoc Buford Bonner (Zed), Frank Doland Bonner, and L. Morris Bonner.
He is survived by his daughter and son in law Bonnie and Kent Wirsing of Fort Valley, Ga., grandchildren Kent and Angela Wirsing of Fernandina Beach, Fl. and Phil and Kathy Bell of W. Lafayette, In., great grandchildren Deanna Bell, Joseph Bell and Robin Bell all of W. Lafayette, In., a sister in law Reba Smith of Carrollton and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 22nd, at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Dyer officiating. Entombment followed in the Carroll Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Military Honors provided by the US Army.
