Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Jun 12 2002 - Shirley Darlene Petty, born on Mother's Day, May 9, 1936, in Clinton, and died at her home, surrounded by her family on May 25, 2002. Shirley was born the youngest of eight children to Abner and Vena Marquis Hicks, she spent most of her life in Clinton, where she worked at Rival Manufacturing and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Life was never easy for Shirley, but she met each challenge head-in, defying defeat with a smile, determination and stubbornness. Having been diagnosed with emphysema over 20 years ago, she struggled every day just to breathe. At last, she struggles no more. For the last several years she shared a home with her sister, Ella, and quite a team they were. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Catherine Onwiler; three brothers, Charles, Kenneth and Birney Hicks, and one son, John Charles Petty. She is survived by six of her seven children, Karen Petty of Orlando, Florida, George and Cindy Petty of Gulfport, Mississippi, Jeff and Myra Talbert of Orlando, Florida, Leon and Susan Richardson of Herndon, Virginia, Joann Harrelson, David and Crystal Petty, all of Clinton; her sister, Ella Harrill of the home; two brothers, Wade and Earl Hicks of Harrisonville; 13 grandchildren and a host of family and friends who will miss her deeply. Funeral services were held at the Vansant-Mills Chapel on Thursday, May 30. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.
