*Born in the Skin Bayou Dist., Cherokee Nation, IT; Dawes Roll #22828.

Son of Samuel Deerskin and Sallie/Sally Edridge both of whom died in 1858, CN, IT. He was raised by the Waters family and took their last name.

He grew up speaking fluent Cherokee and English and used his skills to assist many full blood Cherokee.

He served in the Civil War (CSA) as a Capt. in Co., K, 3rd Regiment enlisting at Flatrock on 11 Jul 1862 and serving under Gen. Stand Watie.

He married a widow (1) Margaret "Peggy" McAlexander Wolf who was a full flood Cherokee b. 1841 d. 1876 (buried at Sanders Cem., Sallisaw, OK); they made their home at "Buckskin Hollow" just north of Vian OK. They had 5 children who were 3/4 Cherokee: David, John, George, Sam, and Sarah.

He married after Peggy's death, in 1877 (2) Mary Catherine Miller (1/8 Cherokee) b. 14 Mar 1856; they had 8 children who were 5/16 Cherokee; Florence, Mose W., Maggie, Grover C., Nannie May, Effie Gertrude, Elalah Valentine, and William Penn Waters (George was 69 years old at the birth of William).

He served as an interpreter during Joe Mayes' term as Chief of the Cherokee. Their home was visited by Cherokee who needed help with their business dealings. He was a highly respected as a Cherokee and as a leader. Chief Rogers selected him to serve as a vice chief curing his term which ended at statehood for OK. He ran a blacksmith shop in Vian with his supplies coming up the AR river on the steamboat "Mary D."
