Mary Ellen grew up in Rock Valley, Iowa, where as a little girl, she loved to ice skate on frozen streams. At least once she skated to the South Dakota border which was about 8 miles away. In 1921, she graduated from Rock Valley High School. Because Mary Ellen wore her hair in "bobs" during the 1920's, she was lovingly given the nickname "Bobbie", which remained with her the rest of her life. She married Frederick Emerson Hambrecht, M.D., in the Little Brown Church of the Vail in Nashua, IA, in 1928. He died in June of 1955.

After graduating from the University of Iowa, she worked as an occupational therapist for several years and helped establish the occupational therapy department at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, IA. For the first few years after her husband set up his surgical practice in Galesburg, IL, she was his secretary. After starting their family, she became a homemaker. Their children are Howard Lloyd Hambrecht, M.D., born November 22, 1936, and Frederick Terry Hambrecht, M.D., born August 18, 1939.

In Galesburg, Bobbie was a member of Chapter N of PEO, the Sorosis Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knox County Medical Association, and the Galesburg Cottage Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to play golf, being a member of Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg for over 50 years. It was reported in the local newspaper that she had won the "Ladies 80 and Over" golf championship. What wasn't reported was that there was only one other lady over 80 in the tournament.

When Bobbie was about to turn 100 years old, invitations for a party were sent to 175 of her friends. Bobbie warmly greeted the almost 150 that actually attended. She died, unexpectedly, a little less than a month after her 100th birthday. Her mind was still very sharp, but her body just wore out.
