Durango resident Gilbert C. Abeyta died of congestive heart failure Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 63.

Mr. Abeyta was born to Alfred and Bernice Abeyta on March 18, 1946, in Center.

On Oct. 17, 1976, he married Jane Gomez in Monte Vista. He was a truck driver.

Mr. Abeyta enjoyed fishing and was a loyal Denver Broncos fan. His family said he was a “loving father and grandfather and friend to those who knew him." They said he was a giving person “who knew no stranger."

Mr. Abeyta is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jane Abeyta, of Center; son, Gilbert Abeyta Jr., of Ignacio; daughter, Sarah Abeyta, of Durango; stepson, Ryan Dominquez, of Texas; sisters Lupe White of Denver, Sarah Vargas of Monte Vista and Marlene Arellano and Karen Valencia, both of Center; brothers Clarence Abeyta of Durango, Lorenzo Abeyta of La Jara and Anthony Abeyta of Denver; and three grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at St. Columba Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., also at St. Columba. Cremation will occur after the service.
